Did Omar Khadr deserve $10.5 million from the federal government?
The OBA Foundation will host a debate in Toronto on the government’s settlement of the Omar Khadr lawsuit, says Toronto business lawyer and OBA Foundation trustee Anton Katz.
This will be the Foundation’s second annual debate, says Katz, principal of Anton M. Katz Barrister and Solicitor.
It will begin at 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 29 at Fasken Martineau DuMoulin LLP, on the 24th floor of Bay Adelaide Centre, 33 Bay St.
Jennifer Hollett, an award-winning journalist and public policy lecturer, will moderate the debate — the resolution for which is: “Be it resolved that the federal government’s settlement of the Omar Khadr lawsuit, whereby it paid him $10.5 million and offered an apology, was fair and reasonable.”
Arguing for the resolution is James Morton, a member of the bars of Ontario and Nunavut, while Rachel Curran — a senior associate with Harper & Associates Consulting, CBC political and public policy commentator, and director of policy to former prime minister Stephen Harper — will argue against it.
Established in 1987, the OBA Foundation is the charitable arm of the Ontario Bar Association. The foundation promotes legal education and advances innovative research with the goal of improving the justice system.
The event is free, but space is limited. To register online, visit www.oba.org/OBAFoundationDebate.
